With bitter cold expected, volunteers needed for Community Warming Center

As bitter temperatures and winter storm conditions are expected, Lawrence/Douglas County Cold Weather Response is seeking volunteers for the Community Warming Center.

Volunteers will play a crucial role in providing a safe and welcoming environment for individuals seeking shelter during extreme cold weather conditions.

The Warming Center, consisting of several churches, is for overnight shelter only, from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Once the Lawrence Community Shelter fills up, individuals will be taken from the shelter to one of several church sites.

Volunteer responsibilities include greeting guests, providing comfort and support, monitoring the space to maintain a clean and welcoming environment, distributing blankets, food and other essential items as needed, and staying alert to assist with any emergencies or needs that arise.
