Lawrence and surrounding area in winter storm warning until 6 p.m.; few more inches of snow expected during the day

The winter snow storm was well underway in downtown Lawrence by 5 a.m. on Feb. 12, 2025.

Lawrence and the surrounding area remains in a winter storm warning until 6 p.m. Wednesday evening, as up to 6 inches of snow remain possible, according to forecasters at the National Weather Service.

The Topeka office of the National Weather Service is predicting that most of the snow will fall before 1 p.m. today. Daytime snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are likely. Those amounts are on top of the the snow that occurred during the early morning hours. The weather service did not list total accumulations overnight, but several other services were reporting between 2 to 3 inches had fallen in the Lawrence area.

Frigid weather is expected throughout the the winter storm. Shortly before 9 a.m., the weather station at the Lawrence Regional Airport measured temperatures at 14 degrees, with a wind chill of zero degrees. Overnight, temperatures are expected to fall to about 4 degrees, with wind chills of next negative 1 to negative 6 degrees.

The cold weather is expected until Friday, when daytime highs are expected to hit 41 degrees. Snow, however, may return on Saturday. The weather service is forecasting a mix of rain and snow on Saturday, with winds up to 30 miles per hour.

During this current winter storm warning, the weather service is predicting both morning and evening commutes will be impacted. Motorists are urged to avoid travel, if possible. If traveling, motorists are recommended to pack a flashlight, food and water in their vehicles in case of an emergency. Current road conditions can be obtained by calling 511.
