Lawrence residents Tom and Robin Gingerich stand by their decorated truck that was part of a recent “Wake Up Lawrence” vehicle parade. The goal of the parade is to engage with people and encourage them to join the efforts to protect individual rights and defend the U.S. Constitution and democracy.
For the better part of a year, Lawrence residents have been been rallying to protect individual rights and defend the U.S. Constitution in regular demonstrations downtown and in parks, but now some have hit the road.
The “Wake Up Lawrence” vehicle parade, a caravan of cars, trucks and trailers, is driving through Lawrence neighborhoods to engage with residents and celebrate American democracy in the face of actions taken by the Trump administration — including on immigration, federal program cuts, civil liberties, the erosion of separation of powers and other issues.
The vehicle parade has previously visited Old West Lawrence and North Lawrence.
The next parade is scheduled for the “thoroughfares” of Lawrence at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Interested persons can meet at 5:45 p.m. at the Union Pacific Depot, 402 N. Second St.
The tour will travel along Lawrence’s major thoroughfares, going west on Sixth Street, south on Iowa Street, east on 23rd Street and north on Massachusetts Street.
