Baker University has appointed an alumnus and a longtime leader in the insurance industry to serve as its interim president as university leaders conduct a search for a new president in 2025.
Hoot Gibson will begin serving as interim president immediately of the private university that is based in Baldwin City. Lynne Murray announced earlier this year that she would step down as Baker University president in December. University officials will conduct a nationwide search for a new president, but a hire is not expected to be made until later in 2025.
Gibson is a 1973 graduate of Baker’s business program, and served as the president of Overland Park-based Waypoint Mutual Insurance Company.
“I am deeply honored to step into the role of interim president of my alma mater and continue serving the university that has meant so much to me,” said Gibson. “Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with our incredible faculty, staff, students, and trustees to advance initiatives that strengthen our mission. As we navigate this transition period, I remain committed to fostering collaboration, innovation, and academic excellence. Together we will continue to build on the strong foundation that makes Baker University so special.”
Gibson previously has played a key role in securing funding for its newest science building, and Baker University Board of Trustees Chair Brenda Stasiulis said Gibson has been a “leader of several transformative university initiatives.”
“Hoot has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to Baker’s mission and values,” Stasiulis said in a press release.
