Members of the 2022 CEK Bat-itudes team celebrate winning the Celebrity Softball Champions trophy at Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence's Celebrity Softball Weekend fundraising event.
The University of Kansas’ athletics director, an Academy Award-winning filmmaker and the Lawrence police chief are just a few of the familiar faces who will take the field in the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence’s Celebrity Softball Weekend.
Two teams sponsored by Grandstand Glassware + Apparel and CEK Insurance will compete both on the softball diamond and in the race to raise the most money for the Boys & Girls Club this weekend. The Boys & Girls Club announced the schedule for its third annual flagship fundraising event in a release Monday.
The rosters for both teams are filled with a number of faces familiar to Kansas Jayhawks fans, including KU Athletics Director Travis Goff. He’ll be joined by plenty of former KU athletes, such as 1,000-point women’s basketball scorer Kylee Kopatich, 2012 Final Four starter Tyshawn Taylor and former Jayhawk defensive lineman Keon Stowers.
“KU is a huge part of this community and so is the Boys & Girls Club,” Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence CEO Monica Dittmer said in the release. “To watch both entities come together in support of the kids in this community is incredibly special. …We’ve got so many famous faces and treasured members of this community who are stepping up to support the Club.”
The event includes not just a softball game but also a “Fanfest Fundraiser” set for 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at Abe & Jake’s Landing. At the fundraiser, attendees will hear speeches from participants and Boys & Girls Club members while bidding on silent auction items. A golden ticket raffle will also be on offer, with the winner getting a trip to Reno, Nevada, for a KU football game.
The seven inning slow-pitch softball game is set for 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Rock Chalk Park.
Tickets for the event and bidding on the silent auction items are available online now. A weekend pass covering admission to both the Fanfest Fundraiser and Saturday’s softball game is $85, or attendees can purchase tickets to only the game for $20. Admission to the softball game is free for those 17 and younger.
