As much as six inches of snow could fall throughout the day on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service office in Topeka.
Lawrence could receive another 4 to 6 inches of snow on Thursday.
Light snow is expected to start after midnight on Thursday morning, said Matt Flanagan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Topeka. He said the snowfall would be heavier from around 6 a.m. until about noon, and that it would taper off later. Light snow could last into the evening.
“We’re not expecting too much impact from blowing or drifting snow,” Flanagan said. “You still have winds gusting up to 20 mph with some moderate to heavy snow; you could have some reduced visibility, especially in that 6 a.m. to noon time frame.”
The snow accumulation is expected to be about 2 inches before 6 a.m. and another 4 inches throughout the day. Winds are expected to come from the north-northeast at 10 to 15 mph, Flanagan said.
Temperatures are expected to fall to 24 degrees overnight Wednesday and won’t get much higher than 27 degrees Thursday afternoon. It could get as cold as 18 degrees overnight Thursday. But the coldest temperatures in the immediate forecast will come overnight on Friday, Flanagan said.
“We could have lows in the single digits with wind chills around zero,” Flanagan said.
The weekend will warm up, with temperatures in the 40s and 50s on Saturday and Sunday and back into the 60s on Monday.
The National Weather Service advises anyone traveling during the storm to carry a flashlight, food, and water in their vehicle in case of an emergency.
