The Lawrence Humane Society on Saturday, Aug. 27, will host its eighth annual Clear the Shelter Day, part of a nationwide pet adoption campaign.

The event, which involves the waiver of adoption fees, aims to get every animal in the shelter matched with a family by the end of the day.

Sebastian, a 2-month-old male, is one of many cats and dogs who will be up for adoption — with no fees — on Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Lawrence Humane Society.

Typically, adoption fees at the Lawrence shelter are around $150 for adult dogs, $300 for puppies, $60 for adult cats and $125 for kittens; those fees will all be waived Saturday.

A news release from the Lawrence shelter said that over the last several years, the shelter has had between 70 and nearly 200 animals adopted on Clear the Shelter Day, including animals who were strays, animals who were surrendered and animals who were transferred in from rural and low-capacity shelters. This year, the Lawrence Humane Society’s goal is to make sure that a minimum of 200 animals (100 dogs and 100 cats) are adopted by the end of the day.

In addition to adoption fees being waived, other services and products are also provided for free.

“Every animal that is adopted goes home spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated and dewormed, and microchipped, along with a collar, leash, and starter bag of Hill’s Science Diet pet food,” the news release said. “The only thing these pets’ new families have to do is love them!”

Clear the Shelter Day will begin at 10 a.m. and will end at 6 p.m., or earlier if all animals are adopted. Potential adopters will need to line up outside the shelter, 1805 E. 19th St., and Lawrence Humane Society staff will allow entrance into the building in manageable groups. Adoption counselors will be able to help potential adopters assess animal behaviors, such as a dog’s or cat’s compatibility with another pet in the home.

The event is spearheaded by NBCUniversal Local Owned Television Stations, a division of NBCUniversal, in partnership with Hill’s Pet Nutrition, according to the news release, which said the effort has helped more than 700,000 pets nationally find forever homes.

Local sponsors for this event include Pawsh Wash, Free State Dental, Warren-McElwain Mortuary, Central National Bank and Stranger Creek Pools Inc.
