The Union Pacific’s historic Big Boy No. 4014 will be making a stop at the railroad’s depot in North Lawrence on Monday afternoon.
The train is scheduled to stop in Lawrence from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. Monday at the Union Pacific Depot at 402 N. Second Street in North Lawrence.
The old steam locomotive, built in 1941, was last in Lawrence in 2019 after the Union Pacific reacquired the engine and restored it as part of a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad. The train once again is making a national tour, having departed from its home base of Cheyenne, Wyo. on Aug. 5.
The engine will be on display all day Tuesday at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo.. The engine will be back in Lawrence on Sept. 2 from 10:15 a.m. to 10:35 a.m. as it makes its way back to its home base.
At 132 feet long and 1.2 million pounds, the engine is a massive machine. It carries 25,000 gallons of water to make it steam, and back in the day carried 56,000 pounds of coal to create its fire. Today, it uses oil instead of coal, according to UP.
The 4014 — one of 25 Big Boy locomotives built — travelled just more than 1 million miles before it was retired from service in 1961.
