Haskell Indian Nations University graduates attend commencement ceremonies Friday, May 10, 2019, at HINU.
Haskell Indian Nations University has suspended its spring commencement, athletics seasons, intramural athletics and prospective student visits because of the coronavirus outbreak. The university previously extended its spring break until March 23 and began a transition to online classes.
The university has also closed the Thorpe Fitness Center, Coffin Sports Complex and Tecumseh Hall on campus.
Students who are presently on campus will be supported and assisted in returning home, if appropriate to their circumstances, the university said in a written announcement Friday.
In the written message, students were told that all “course instruction and associated requirements are transitioning to virtual (remote) instruction for our classes.” The message indicated students would be accessing class information through an online portal. The statement said staff is working on making the transition to remote instruction and expects the transition to be completed by March 23.
“Native students and their communities deserve nothing less than the safest, most affordable, and highest quality education,” Haskell administration said in the message. “We will continue to meet student learning outcomes and course objectives, albeit through different methods. Rest assured that even with in-person classes suspended, students will be able to accomplish their academic goals through Blackboard and remote learning.”
Haskell has advised students to remain in contact with faculty and advisors, and it assured students that all personal possessions left in residence halls would be safe. All residence hall doors will be locked, a Saturday message said.
For questions, students are asked to call 785-830-2770 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, or email infoline@haskell.edu.
