Just over 5,000 Lawrence customers of electricity provider Evergy were without power Friday morning, according to the company’s online outage map.

The outages were located in a wide area of central and south-central Lawrence, centered around 19th and 23rd streets, from Iowa Street to near Haskell Avenue. The outages affected more than 10% of the electric company’s 46,000 customers in Lawrence.

Several Lawrence public schools were affected by the outage, according to a post on the district’s social media accounts. The affected schools were Broken Arrow Elementary School, Billy Mills Middle School, Centennial Adult Education Center, Cordley Elementary School, Schwegler Elementary School and Lawrence High School.

Evergy’s website did not list a cause for the outages, which it said began around 9:30 a.m. Crews were on their way and the company estimated that power would be restored around 11:15 a.m.
