Expect wintry weather in Lawrence on Friday, and for those who may be on the road after midnight, expect snow to start falling around 3 a.m.

Bill Gargan, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Topeka, said the official forecast for Lawrence is 5.5 inches of snow, but that depending on how the storm moves, the city could only see a couple inches.

Lawrence will be under a winter storm warning from 9 p.m. Thursday to 3 p.m. Friday, so residents should plan on slick roads and hazardous driving conditions.

There is also a potential for sleet and freezing rain. Gargan said a light snow could likely begin falling by 3 a.m. Friday morning with sleet to follow. But by 9 a.m., he said it will likely be only snow falling down for the rest of the day.

As for the temperature, the low Thursday night is 25 degrees, and the high on New Year’s Day will be 30 degrees, with an evening low of around 17 degrees.
