The COVID-19 pandemic accomplished what two world wars, the Great Depression and the Spanish Flu outbreak of 1918 couldn’t do: lead organizers of the Vinland Fair to cancel the annual three-day event.

The board of the Vinland Fair announced the cancellation on its website, http://www.vinlandfair.com/. The fair was scheduled for Aug. 6-8. A posting on the Vinland Fair Facebook page says the decision is consistent with the decisions of other fair boards to either cancel fairs or make them online events.

The Vinland Fair was held in the 1870s and has been an annual event in the southern Douglas County hamlet of Vinland since 1907. It has maintained an old-fashioned feel with homemade dinners, ice cream and pie, as well as children’s games, an amateur talent show and no commercial vendors or exhibitors.
