Forecast for June 4, 2019

Intermittent thunderstorms and scattered showers rolled through Lawrence Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning, dropping 1.61 inches of rain in the central part of town, the National Weather Service in Topeka reported.

Lawrence Municipal Airport, north of town, received only .47 inches of rain in the same time period, however.

Chances of thunderstorms and scattered showers continue through the week, with some of the storms potentially producing heavy rainfall in one area and much less in another nearby.

“There is a lot of moisture in the atmosphere,” John Woynick, a meteorologist with the weather service in Topeka, told the Journal-World Tuesday morning, which is why some of the storms could build and produce locally heavy rain.

Woynick said that Lawrence could receive 2 more inches of rain through Saturday. Some of the storms through the week could bring a marginal risk of damaging winds and hail, as well as heavy rain, Woynick said. However, the chance of widespread hazardous weather was low, he said.
