A blizzard is expected to hit parts of the plains and Midwest region this weekend, but it will likely miss Lawrence, according to a meteorologist from the National Weather Service in Topeka.

“There could be a few flurries here in northeast Kansas,” meteorologist Daniel Reese said of Saturday night’s forecast. “But it doesn’t look like it will be anything notable.”

The bulk of the blizzard will likely hit eastern Colorado, northwest Kansas, Nebraska, eastern South Dakota and North Dakota and northern Minnesota. Reese said that the heaviest parts of the storm could drop 6 to 12 inches of snow.

In northeast Kansas, “rain should be the main hazard for us,” Reese said. He said to expect about 3/4 inch to an inch of moderate to heavy rain from Friday night into Saturday. There could also be a thunderstorm or two, he said.

After mild weather on Christmas and a drop in temperatures Thursday, Reese said Friday’s high will be around 42 degrees. On Saturday, it will be “briefly warm again,” he said, just ahead of a cold front. The high temperature is expected to be around 61 degrees on Saturday before dropping to around 38 degrees on Sunday.
