Kansas’ electronic court filing and records systems will be unavailable for the next two weeks because of a “security incident,” and all filings will have to be done on paper during that time, according to a news release from state judicial officials.

While district courts will remain open, the Kansas Supreme Court on Friday ordered them to use paper filings for the next two weeks while the incident is being investigated, according to a news release from the Office of Judicial Administration. The release did not provide details about the nature of the security incident, how it was identified or what might have caused it.

Switching to paper is “an appropriate next step in a situation like this to define the extent to which our systems are affected,” Chief Justice Marla Luckert said in the release. “We’ve called in experts to continue that process, and I’m grateful for the number of people who have reached out to us with offers of support.”

Among the systems affected were the Kansas Courts eFiling system; the Kansas Protection Order Portal; systems that allow searches of district and appellate court case information; a payment processing system; and a system that allows people to look up attorneys. Online marriage applications were also affected. Those applications will only be handled by paper while the incident is investigated.

The incident was first reported by the Office of Judicial Administration on Thursday evening, when it was described as a “network issue.” The Supreme Court plans to issue an updated order on Monday, according to the release.
