As the city weighs its options for completing the Lawrence Loop trail system, residents have a chance to weigh in on which route designs they like best.
An open house on the Lawrence Loop is scheduled from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St., the city announced on Tuesday. There, you can share your thoughts on how the city should close the three gaps in the trail system: one in the downtown area, one in and around the Pinkney Neighborhood, and one in northwest Lawrence.
Maps from the city show several proposed trail alignments for each area, along with some information about the potential obstacles that each one might face, such as high construction costs, easements or additional infrastructure such as bridges that would be needed. These routes are the options that will be discussed at the open house.
The city also has a survey available through Feb. 3 on its website, at lawrenceks.gov/2026/01/community-input-bikes-plan-loop. Respondents can select which routes they prefer and leave written comments, too.
When complete, the Lawrence Loop will be a more than 20-mile network of continuous trails around the city. It’s been in the works for roughly a decade, as the Journal-World has reported, and the planning for the missing segments is currently being done as part of an update to the city’s bicycle infrastructure plan. Once the public feedback is in, the Bike Plan Update Steering Committee will review it and make a recommendation on which routes to include in the plan; then plan would then be open for more public comments before consideration by multiple city advisory boards and, ultimately, the Lawrence City Commission.
