Change and new faces have carried the night in the Lawrence City Commission elections. With all precincts now reporting, political newcomers Mike Courtney and Kristine Polian are the unofficial winners of the two open seats on the commission. The lone incumbent in the race, Bart Littlejohn, finished fourth in the four-person field, while former city commissioner and mayor Bob Schumm fell about 1,400 votes short of winning a seat.
In the Lawrence school board race, two of the three incumbents — Shannon Kimball and Kelly Jones — rolled to victory but incumbent Bob Byers has seemingly lost a close race for the final spot. Matt Lancaster has bested Byers by 33 votes in unofficial returns. While three seats are up for election, the school board actually has one more seat to fill due to the recent resignation of Anne Costello from the board. Board members are free to choose any eligible district resident, which could be a path to Byers keeping a seat on the board.
As a result, all of the vote totals are unofficial, and could change as provisional ballots and other contested ballots are counted. However, unofficial results, especially of this margin, historically have held. Here’s a look at the unofficial results:
Lawrence City Commission (Two open seats)
Michael Courtney: 8,211
Kristine Polian: 7,833
Bob Schumm: 6,448
Bart Littlejohn (I): 5,015

The latest results also have widened some leads in area races. It is now looking more likely that Baldwin City will have a new mayor and at least one new council member. Two newcomers in the Eudora City Commission have opened a commanding lead.
Incumbents in the Eudora school board race, however, have safe leads to keep their seats.
