The City of Lawrence will temporarily close Water Tower Park early next month for construction activities and removal of the tower.
The park at 1225 Sunset Drive will be closed from July 8 to July 13. During that time, access to the playground and picnic area will be off limits to maintain a safe environment for workers and park visitors, the city said in a news release.
Public engagement sessions will reconvene this fall to gather community input and discuss desired park improvements. As the Journal-World reported, the city approved the park project in 2020.
The city is currently in the design phase for the new water tower, according to information on the city’s website. The project involves the replacement of the water tower, the surrounding cast iron waterline and appurtenances, and the housing structure for the Douglas County Emergency Management communications equipment. The project budget is approximately $3.8 Million.
