One killed, one critical in late-night crash on South Lawrence Trafficway
The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that killed one person and critically injured another in southwest Lawrence on Friday night.
Douglas County Deputies, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical, and Consolidated Fire District No. 1 were called to the 384-mile marker on U.S. Highway 40, also known as the South Lawrence Trafficway or Kansas Highway 10, at 10:29 on Friday night.
Radio traffic from arriving firefighters reported two vehicles with heavy damage and one person trapped inside a vehicle.
One person died at the scene.
Medics transported one person in critical condition to a Kansas City area hospital.
In a news release, the Sheriff’s Office says that all lanes of the South Lawrence Trafficway are closed between West 27th Street and Iowa Street.
“The highway will remain shut down for the next few hours,” the release said. “The Kansas Highway Patrol will be the lead agency on the crash investigation.”
