The deadline to file as a candidate for Lawrence City Commission, Lawrence school board and a variety of other elected offices in Douglas County communities is Monday at noon, and slates in all of the county’s cities are starting to take shape.
Those who still wish to file for election may come to the Douglas County Elections Office, 711 W. 23rd St. in Lawrence, on Monday to fill out the paperwork, said Ed Healy, the deputy clerk for the elections office. Healy said the office will open at 8 a.m. Monday, four hours before the filing deadline.
Here’s a look at the candidates in several races as of the end of the business day on Friday. The general election this year is scheduled for Nov. 4.
The Lawrence City Commission has two seats up for election this year, and the field currently includes 12 candidates and will require a primary, which will take place on Aug. 5. The candidates are Paul Buskirk, Michael Courtney, Eric Hyde, Alex Kerr, Steve Jacob, Ruby Mae Johnson, Amanda Nielsen, Sean Noble, Bob Schumm, Peter Shenouda and Courtney Shipley, as well as current City Commissioner Bart Littlejohn, who is seeking reelection.
The Lawrence school board has five candidates vying for three open seats. They are ChrisTopher Niles Enneking, Matt Lancaster, Molly Starr, Pam Shaw and incumbent Bob Byers, who is seeking reelection.
Outside of Lawrence, there are seats up for election on other communities’ school boards, city councils and commissions.
Baldwin City mayor and council: Residents will elect a mayor and two at-large seats on the city council. Gerald “Gerry” Cullumber has filed to run for mayor, and four candidates have filed for a spot on the city council: Dan Riney, J. King, Peter Wentz and Robert L. Flegal Jr.
Baldwin City school board: Baldwin City elects its school board by geographic districts, and its first, second and third districts each have one seat up for election this year. Each district has had one candidate file so far: Randee M. Kallas in the first district, Miranda Hamrick in the second district and Jennifer Clark in the third district.
Eudora City Commission: Residents will elect one city commissioner this year. Four candidates have filed for that seat: Grant High, Jason E. Musick, John M. Cullen Jr. and Timothy Reazin.
Eudora school board: Three candidates have filed for the one at-large seat on the Eudora school board: Heather Whalen, Kenny Massey and Joseph Hurla.
Lecompton mayor and council: Residents will elect a mayor and two at-large seats on the city council. No candidates have filed in the mayoral race, and two candidates have filed for city council: Troy Clark and Norraine “Waynie” Wingfield.
Perry-Lecompton school board: No candidates have filed in Douglas County to run for the Perry-Lecompton school board.
There are other races that have no candidate filings yet in Douglas County, as well, such as the Wellsville school board, which includes a small bit of southeastern Douglas County and has three seats up for election. Healy said races that don’t have any candidates will still be included in the general election in November, and the ballot will have write-in spaces and instructions.
