Guppy is one of about a dozen dogs who's adoption fees are currently being waived at the Lawrence Humane Society. On Saturday, Lawrence Humane will host a "Clear the Shelter" event where all animals' adoption fees are waived.

The Lawrence Humane Society’s annual Clear the Shelter Day is scheduled for Aug. 23, when all adoption fees will be waived.

Over the last several years, Lawrence Humane has had anywhere from 70 to nearly 200 animals adopted on Clear the Shelter Day — part of a nationwide pet adoption campaign that is spearheaded by NBCUniversal in partnership with Hill’s Pet Nutrition.

On Saturday, adoptions for all animals will require no adoption fees, which can cost hundreds of dollars depending on the type of pet up for adoption. This year, the Lawrence Humane Society hopes to find homes for 150 animals that day.

All the animals that are up for adoption are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Along with the adoption event on Saturday, certain animals are available for no-fee adoptions throughout the week.

“While this event is incredibly fun and exciting, the day moves fast and it can be stressful for certain dogs. We want to make sure we’re doing right by these amazing animals by giving them the best opportunity to find great homes in a calmer, slower manner,” the humane society said in a news release.

Around a dozen dogs currently have their adoption fees waived throughout the week including:

• Russet, described in a humane society news release as a “cherub both in looks and demeanor” who “enjoys every opportunity to be in the company of people.” Russet is crate-trained, house-trained and has also done well around children in the past.

• Ruby Jean, who is described as “looking for a home with a dog looking for a buddy.” She is best with a canine BFF who can help guide her through new situations and people. Ruby Jean also loves cheese and cats, and is so gentle with them.

• Guppy, listed as “a big fan of cuddling and would be thrilled to keep you warm this winter.” Not only does he love playing tug of war, but he enjoys having baths and his nails clipped. Guppy is crate-trained, easy to walk, but would do best as the only dog in the home.

A full-list of animals that are available for adoption are on the shelter’s website.

Even if someone isn’t able to adopt an animal, Lawrence Humane encourages people to share the event on social media to help spread the word.

“The more people who know about this mega adoption event, the more shelter pets will be sleeping in new homes on Saturday night,” a statement from Lawrence Humane said.

This week, the shelter will be open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday and be closed on Friday to prepare for the event on Saturday. On Saturday the shelter will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
