No injuries were reported in an overnight fire Thursday that left two Lawrence apartments uninhabitable.

Investigators on Thursday afternoon determined that the fire was accidental and was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.

Firefighters were called to 1430 Louisiana St. at 2:23 a.m. According to radio traffic, a police officer was the first to arrive at the address and report heavy fire with indications that all residents had evacuated.

Fire crews reported flames on second and third-level balconies along with the roof of the three-story building. During building searches, firefighters confirmed that all residents were outside the building and uninjured.

The fire was declared under control just after 3:10 a.m.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical said later Thursday that two residents were evaluated on-scene for minor smoke inhalation but did not require further medical attention. Additional medic units were dispatched to keep displaced residents warm. Residents were displaced from two apartment units, which were determined to be uninhabitable based on fire damage.
