The playground at Clinton Park is currently closed after someone apparently vandalized a play structure in a way that made it unsafe to use, according to a city official.

Mark Hecker, assistant director of Parks and Recreation, said during a Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting Monday night that someone over the weekend had removed the caps from the tops of the poles holding up the play structure.

The playground had just recently opened after a yearlong process of updating the structure, Hecker said, but it wasn’t safe to have the playground open while the structure was missing the caps.

Hecker also said Monday night that the department had already ordered new caps for the poles.

The Journal-World reached out to both Parks and Recreation and the Lawrence Police Department on Tuesday for more information about the incident, but had not heard back as of 4:15 p.m.
