A Lawrence high school student died after a shooting Friday night in Olathe, according to a news release from the Olathe Police Department.

Brianna Higgins, a 15-year-old sophomore at Lawrence High School, was driven to Olathe Medical Center by an unknown person around 11 p.m. Friday. Police were contacted before Higgins’ arrival at the hospital, but Higgins was declared dead a short time later, according to the release.

The shooting occurred near the 16900 block of West 127th Street, the release said.

Lawrence school district officials held a moment of silence for Higgins during Monday night’s school board meeting. Board president Kelly Jones said the district’s crisis response team would be providing support for students and staff.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Higgins to assist the family with funeral expenses, and as of Tuesday morning, it had raised $4,300 of its $20,000 goal.

“We want to make sure we do all we can to support and wrap our arms around this family,” Lawrence school district Superintendent Anthony Lewis said.

The case remains under investigation. Olathe police are asking that anyone with information about the shooting contact the department directly at 913-971-6363 or call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
