The Lawrence Arts Center is seeking a local artist to create an indoor mural for the new Dillons store that’s coming to the University of Kansas’ west campus, and applications will be open until mid-January.
According to the Arts Center’s website, the mural will be 7 feet high by 18 feet wide and will be displayed in the vestibule of the new store at 2205 Iowa St. The mural is intended to “celebrate the unique, unmistakable identity of Lawrence,” the Arts Center’s site said.
Local artists interested in the project are asked to submit their qualifications to the project director, Marlo Angell, via email at marlo@lawrenceartscenter.org no later than Jan. 13, 2025. Then, up to three finalists will be selected from the applicant pool and awarded $400 each to develop specific proposals for the mural. The selected artist will receive a commission fee of $10,000 for the artwork.
As the Journal-World reported, the new Dillons will anchor a major commercial development on KU’s west campus. It will eventually replace the current store on 23rd Street and will have 86,000 square feet of retail space, about 30,000 square feet more than the 23rd Street store. The 23rd Street location will stay open until construction of the new store is complete.
