Those attending Bob Dole’s centennial celebration Saturday at the Dole Institute of Politics may have noticed the absence of one prominent guest: Dole’s widow, former U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole.
According to the institute’s director, Audrey Coleman, Dole was unable to make her scheduled appearance due to injuries sustained from a recent fall that resulted in two broken ribs. Coleman told the audience that Dole sent “warm wishes” from her home in Washington, D.C., and also told the Journal-World that Dole’s presence was “sorely missed.”
“It was not the same to be able to celebrate him without her,” Coleman said, but added that the institute was honored to host Dole’s daughter, Robin Dole.
While delivering a spirited speech in honor of her father, Robin Dole also mentioned Elizabeth Dole.

“(Elizabeth) joins me in thanking the University of Kansas, the team at the Dole institute, (and) all of our wonderful program participants,” she said, adding that Elizabeth is on the road to recovery.
Elizabeth Dole, 86, was a U.S senator (R-N.C.) from 2003 to 2009. She also served as the U.S. secretary of Transportation (1983-87) and U.S. secretary of Labor (1989-90).
Another notable absence from the event was KU Chancellor Douglas Girod. According to Coleman, Girod was unavailable due to a previously scheduled travel engagement.
