Graduation ceremonies to honor more than 800 Lawrence High School, Free State High School graduates

Updated 11:20 a.m. Monday, May 23: Free State High School’s ceremony has been moved to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 26, due to expected inclement weather.

More than 800 public high school students will soon celebrate their graduations.

The graduation ceremonies for Free State High School and Lawrence High School are coming up on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, respectively, and the school district has provided details for those preparing to celebrate the big day.

Those marking the completion of their high school diploma include 448 graduates from Free State and 375 from Lawrence High, as well as students in the district’s adult education and virtual school programs. The events do not require tickets and there are no attendance limits.

See below for information about all four ceremonies, as well as the post-graduation party Project Graduation, provided by the Lawrence school district.

Free State High Graduation:

• 7 p.m. May 26, Free State Stadium, 4700 Overland Drive (rescheduled from May 24 because of weather)

• Graduating seniors should arrive between 6 and 6:30 p.m. at the baseball and softball fields.

• Accessible parking located in the parking lot across from the football stadium ticket booths. There will be accessible seating on the track. In addition, staff will operate golf carts between the parking lot and the stadium for individuals needing assistance.

• Superintendent Anthony Lewis, School Board President Erica Hill, and Principal Myron Graber will offer remarks and introductions. Student speakers are Maxine Finch and Chaney Finkeldei.

• If changes to the schedule must be made due to inclement weather, an announcement will be made by noon, including direct notification of Free State staff and families.

Lawrence High Graduation:

• 7 p.m. May 25, LHS Stadium, 1901 Louisiana St.

• Graduates should arrive at 6:30 p.m.

• Increased handicapped parking is available in the north parking lot and will be marked with signage.

• Superintendent Anthony Lewis, School Board President Erica Hill, and Principal Jessica Bassett will offer remarks and introductions. Student speakers are Jake Shew and Gianna Cooper.

• If changes to the schedule must be made due to inclement weather, an announcement will be made by noon, including direct notification of Lawrence High staff and families.

Alternate dates for both high schools, if needed, are May 26 and/or May 27.

In addition to graduation at Free State and Lawrence High, the district will also celebrate graduates from its adult education program and virtual school program. The adult education graduation will take place at 7 p.m. on June 2 at Lawrence College and Career Center, 2910 Haskell Ave. The Lawrence Virtual School graduation will take place at 1 p.m. May 21 at the LHS auditorium, 1901 Louisiana St.

The parent-organized post-graduation party for high school seniors, Project Graduation, will be held from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. May 25 at Abe and Jake’s Landing, 8 E. Sixth St. Project Graduation is open to graduating seniors from all high schools in Lawrence and includes food, games, music, prizes and dancing.
