The Lawrence school district will hold a ribbon-cutting and open house on Monday for the Montessori program at New York Elementary School.

The Lawrence school board approved the changeover at New York Elementary from a regular teaching method to a Montessori method in April, and the transition began this school year with the addition of a classroom called the Children’s House. The Children’s House serves ages 3, 4 and kindergarten, and the district plans to add higher grades year by year.

New York Montessori is the first public Montessori program in the state of Kansas, according to district spokesperson Julie Boyle. Boyle said the event would include brief remarks from Kansas Commissioner of Education Randy Watson, Lawrence school board President Shannon Kimball and Superintendent Anthony Lewis, as well as classroom tours and refreshments.

The event will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at New York Elementary School, 936 New York St.
