FSHS girls swimming 2nd, LHS 3rd at league meet

Free State junior Claire Campbell (middle) jumps out to an early lead in the 200-yard freestyle at the Sunflower League meet Saturday at California Trail Middle School. Campbell set the league meet record with a time of 1:51.66. The Free State junior also won the 100-yard freestyle.

? Free State junior Claire Campbell knew that she had clocked in with a good time when she touched the final wall in the 200-yard freestyle at the Sunflower League meet on Saturday at California Trail Middle School, but it wasn’t until a few seconds later that she realized what she had actually accomplished.

Campbell shaved nearly two seconds off of Friday’s preliminaries time to finish with a time of 1:51.66 — which set a new Sunflower League meet record by 0.12 seconds.

“It was so exciting,” Campbell said. “I didn’t know that I had got it until they announced it. I was really excited to hear that.”

The Free State junior followed up her victory in the 200 freestyle with a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle, and helped the Firebirds take second at the league meet for the second straight year.

“I was really proud how we came together as a team,” Campbell said. “We got second. Even though we obviously would have rather gotten first, we came together and we had fun, which is all that matters.”

The Firebirds finished second in all three relays, and received third-place individual performances from Ava Cormaney in the 100 breaststroke and Janet Stefanov in the 100 backstroke.

Free State racked up 245 points to finish second to Shawnee Mission East, which won the meet with a score of 282.

The Firebirds are looking forward at getting another shot at the Lancers and the rest of the Class 6A field at the state meet on May 19-20 at the Capitol Federal Natatorium in Topeka. Campbell has set some lofty goals for herself individually as well.

“We’re going to work really hard the next week and a half setting ourselves up for a good state meet,” Campbell said. “I have goals of becoming a state champion for the first time, and I want our relays to become state champions also and just have a good time with all of my teammates and really enjoy the moment.”

LHS 200 medley team breaks school record; Lions finish third

While the Lancers and Firebirds convincingly claimed the top two spots in the league meet team standings for the past four years, Lawrence High made a serious threat to end that streak on Saturday.

The Lions placed third with 227 points, and made a statement by winning the 200 medley relay by nearly three seconds to open the day.

Along with the first-place finish, sophomore Maddie Dean, freshman Marian Frick, sophomore Emily Guo and freshman Megan Drumm etched their names in the school record books after clocking in with a total time of 1:51.32.

“It’s just really exciting to know that I’ll have a record at LHS,” Dean said. “It will be really fun for a while because I think it will be hard to beat, too.”

Lawrence High sophomore Emily Guo swims the butterfly leg of the Lions' 200-yard medley relay at the Sunflower League meet on Saturday at California Trail Middle School.

With the relay being composed entirely of underclassmen, Dean is looking forward to the challenge to dropping the school record time even lower over the course of the next two years. Dean, Frick, Guo and Drumm beat the previous mark by 0.39 seconds.

“It’s really nice because we know that in the future that we can do even better like when we’re seniors and juniors,” Dean said. “It will be really fun.”

The medley relay was the first of three events that the Lions won. Guo returned to the pool to win the 200 IM (2:09.13), and Frick finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.51). Frick and Guo also garnered respective third-place finishes in the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly.

Sophomore Morgan Jones added a runner-up performance in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:13.93. Jones also helped the Lions take third in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

“Every year it’s getting a little closer,” said Dean of cracking the top two spots in the team standings. “Hopefully next year we’ll get even closer or beat them.”
