Letter: Animal advocate

To the editor:

No one can argue that animals are living, breathing beings that can feel pain. It is time for Kansas to revamp the laws on animal welfare to properly represent them.

We need laws that cover leaving animals in dangerous situations they are unable to escape from (i.e. in a hot car, or left on a chain unsupervised). I have been told that animal control was already “checking-in on” an animal that had been in a car for at least 30 minutes on a 70-plus-degree day. Current laws are so vague that it is difficult to get help for these animals.

Animal cruelty is considered a Class A nonperson misdemeanor (also known as petty theft). An assault charge is a more appropriate definition of the crime, and it will carry a stronger punishment. For lesser offenses, such as the first time you leave an animal unattended on a chain, an animal care class should be required. This will clear up any genuine misconceptions about proper animal care.

Most importantly, we need a public list of known offenders to help prevent abusers from adopting more animals. This may not stop all chances of having repeat offenders, but it will greatly reduce the risk of someone unknowingly entrusting them with an animal.

Animals rely on humans to be their advocates. It is time we do them justice and demand appropriate laws for their protection.
