Free State High boys basketball coach Chuck Law won’t be returning as coach next season.

Law told school officials of his decision to resign on Monday to let them prepare to fill his vacancy, and he also met with his former players. He is declining further comment until after Lawrence High’s boys basketball team finishes its season at the state tournament this weekend to avoid taking any attention away from the Lions.

Law coached at Free State for nine years and led the Firebirds to the state tournament in 2007 and 2013 and an 11-10 record this season.

Free State athletic director Mike Hill said the school will immediately begin searching for his replacement.
