Letter: Valued artists

To the editor:

On the East Ninth Street project: There is often an unfortunate tendency to undervalue local art and artists of all kinds, a bias exacerbated by prairie humility and bicoastal arrogance. We can only hope the selection committee does not fall prey to that bias.

No matter the committee’s tastes, I think we can all agree it would truly be tragic if implementation of the project were to result in the displacement of local artists by pricing them out of the neighborhood. That is the heart of the “controversy.”

Will the project celebrate and sustain East Lawrence’s vibrant community? Or will it undermine and replace it?
