Letter: No incentives

To the editor:

About two years ago, entrepreneurs built a lovely Comfort Inn and Suites adjacent to McDonald Drive and the Hallmark facility. It has more than ample private parking. It was built without a single cent of tax rebates or other incentives.

As long as investors are willing and able to build hotels in Lawrence without taxpayer-financed kickbacks, the city has absolutely no business handing out subsidies! No study has shown that we have a shortage of hotel rooms, and no study has shown that more hotels will improve our quality of live.

Given the murky record of needless recent incentives and no-bid contracts, the Lawrence City Commission would do residents a favor by tabling all rebate and incentive issues until the next commission takes office. Will we instead see a flurry of tax rebate handouts in the waning days of this commission?
