Quick study: Firebird Robinson takes hurdle titles

Free State High junior Tayvien Robinson didn’t go out for the track team for the past two years. But this spring, he wanted to join some of his best friends on the Firebirds squad, and he’s doing more than just having fun on the sidelines.

Robinson set a personal record when he won in the 300-meter hurdles (44.49), and he also took first place in the 100 hurdles.

Robinson’s wins were among the many highlights for the Firebirds and Lawrence High’s track-and-field teams at the LHS Invitational on Wednesday — also known as the “Little KU Relays” — which is for all of the athletes who didn’t qualify for this weekend’s Kansas Relays. Both the boys and girls LHS teams finished in second place, while Free State’s girls tied for third, and the boys took fifth.

With some of the top hurdlers sitting out in preparation for this weekend’s mega-meet, Robinson made the most of his chance to shine.

“Oh, man, it’s a real confidence boost,” Robinson said with a wide smile. “I can’t wait until the next meet now. I want to see what I can do against the big dogs.”

Robinson, who last competed in track in the summer before his freshman year, has been working with FSHS coach Jordan Rose on his steps in between the hurdles and even just staying in his lane. After the rust started to wear off, he started to see solid results. He noted he had his lead foot over each hurdle Wednesday.

“It’s good to see him over the last couple of meets,” Rose said. “Last week he really put some stuff together at Blue Valley. Seeing him today kind of just continue on with that smoothness and doing really well was exciting.”

Free State’s boys track team also picked up wins from Heath Milner in the 100-meter dash and Evan Schoenen in the 400, while the girls saw victories from Hannah Walter in the shot put and Kahler Wiebe in the javelin.

Lawrence High's Maddie Stegman hands off to Shelly Ward in the girls 4 X 800 relay on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at LHS.

“I think it builds a lot of confidence,” Rose said of the Little KU meet. “I think that they start to see that they actually can push themselves a little bit further than they thought they could. That’s been a real positive experience for them and one of the reasons why I really like this meet because it gives them the opportunity to kind of be up there.”

A lot of the athletes said there wasn’t as much pressure without some of the elite athletes competing against them.

“I feel like I had more of a chance to place in those events being that there weren’t so many people with experience here today,” said LHS sophomore Lexi Anglin, who took second in the discus, third in the javelin and sixth in the shot put. “It gives me more self confidence when people aren’t here because I feel like I can do a lot better and not get outshined by other people.”

The Lions had quite a few athletes set personal records throughout the day, and they swept the shot put with Trey Georgie winning for the boys and Moneque Bean taking the girls title. Georgie set a personal record by a foot with a toss of 46 feet, 4 inches.

Whether it was less pressure or something else, most of the athletes were just happy with how they competed.

“I keep telling myself that it’s just a mental battle,” said LHS sophomore Garrett Prescott, who took second place in the boys 3,200. “I can do it if I tell myself I can do it, and I can push my limits physically.”

The preps portion of the Kansas Relays will begin at 8 a.m. Friday at Rock Chalk Park.
