Lions see positives but fall to ONW

Lawrence High baseball coach Brad Stoll got a glimpse Tuesday evening of the kind of at-bats he wants out of his Lions. To his dismay, they all came in one frame, and Olathe Northwest held Lawrence hitless for three-inning stretches to open and close a 5-3 road victory.

The Lions only managed three hits in the loss, and they came on consecutive at-bats in the bottom of the fourth inning from junior Brad Kincaid, senior Michael Sinks and senior Zak McAlister. The three singles, followed by RBI-groundouts from senior Stephen Garcia and junior Daonte Lowery, allowed LHS (1-5) to tie the game, 3-3.

But Stoll said his team too often failed to step into the box ready to hit and apply pressure.

“You can’t do that,” the coach said. “We’ve got to find a way to have several innings with several quality (at bats) to win in this league against a good team like that.”

After rallying back from a three-run deficit, created by two singles and three RBIs from the Ravens’ Sam Harding, LHS second baseman Sinks said the Lions felt they had momentum.

“Good at-bats feed off of good at-bats,” Sinks said. “Even if we’re just hitting the ball hard.”

However, the Lions couldn’t build on their brief outburst, and ONW scored the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth on an RBI-single from No. 9 hitter Henry Smits. The Ravens padded their lead in the seventh by scoring on a passed ball.

Nyle Anderson led off the bottom of the seventh for Lawrence by reaching on an error, but then got caught attempting to steal second base. With two outs, Kincaid hit a ball deep in the hole between shortstop and third, but ONW shortstop Austin Hansen snagged it on the run, leapt with his momentum carrying him away from first base and gunned it to the other side of the infield for the decisive out.

Stoll said the loss boiled down to ONW scoring runs when LHS gave the visitors free passes, which he deemed a fixable issue.

Added Sinks: “Late in the game, we’re not tough right now. we need to learn how to be tough late in the game. That’s what it’s gonna come down to.”
