Letter: Tax alternative

To the editor:

Some say that the shenanigans of the city over the Rock Chalk Park and other similar projects will affect the vote for a 0.2 of a percent sales tax increase to finance the police building project. I think it should.

It’s too bad that those who really, really want a new police building project can’t find a way to get a new proposal on the November ballot. It could be a simple “yes” or “no” vote to levy a surcharge on all the “for profit” properties who have received any kind of tax incentives from the city.

I suspect the same 0.2 of a percent would be enough. After all, any kind of tax increase on all the rest of us is just a surcharge in disguise. It’s time these properties started paying their fair share for these services and stopped mooching off the “Average Joe Taxpayer.”
