Letter: ‘No’ to sales tax

To the editor:

Nov. 4, the sales tax vote will appear on your ballot. Vote no! This is simply another dip into the pockets of citizens that isn’t justified by the city that has blatantly spent millions and millions on sports parks to libraries to parking garages to empty buses.

If $25 million or so made the police better or saved one life it could be argued for. Fact is, they have better accommodations than most businesses who actually pay taxes instead of running on 21 percent of the city’s general fund budget. The proposed site is bad, and costs are inflated. Spending public money should be done much more responsibly than our city commission has done.

During 2013 the city of Lawrence spent $16,222,471 on police. That’s more than the city spent on Fire and Medical combined, and they arguably are saving more lives. The ballot doesn’t ask if you like your local policeman, but it does ask if you want to impose a tax on yourself. NO!
