Letter: Pathetic act

To the editor:

I am ashamed of somebody in this town.

Dad came into Lawrence on Sunday (Nov. 23) to have lunch. He parked in the disabled parking stall in front of M&M Office Supply (the single stall, where you cannot possibly anger a neighboring parker), and we headed to lunch at Free State just after noon. Cheddar ale soup and the fish and chips for both of us. We had a pleasant lunch. He went on his way back to his home in rural Kansas City, Kan., and I went to my home here.

Dad called me on Monday to say “that was an expensive lunch.” Someone keyed the passenger side of his car, and the repair estimate is just shy of $1,000.

Whether the K-State plate on front, the veteran’s plate on back, or the disabled placard hanging from the mirror, something caused someone to take umbrage at my dad’s car’s presence in Lawrence. Someone objected to the presence of a disabled and retired high school teacher, farmer and soldier.

I’ve graduated from both KU and KSU — my gut says it was the Powercat plate.

Shame on the person who keyed the red Chevy Equinox on 600 Mass on an otherwise pleasant Sunday afternoon, whatever the “reason.” I’ve called this town my home for 14 years, but now my kids and I cannot have lunch with their grandfather in Lawrence anymore. He can ill afford this

$1,000 repair bill, and certainly not another. It saddens me beyond expression.

Your actions are pathetic and contemptible.
