21-year-old KU student charged with aggravated sexual battery, criminal restraint

A 21-year-old Kansas University student was charged Wednesday with aggravated sexual battery and criminal restraint.

The man, who identifies himself on his LinkedIn profile as a former KU student housing resident assistant, was arrested Tuesday after a woman told Lawrence police that she was sexually assaulted on Monday, Lawrence Police Department spokesman Trent McKinley said.

“She advised (that) the suspect, who is known to the victim, had nonconsensual sexual contact with her at a residence in central Lawrence,” McKinley said.

Officers contacted the suspect Tuesday, resulting in the arrest, McKinley said.

The victim was not physically injured in the incident, McKinley said.

Douglas County Pro Tem Judge James George set a $40,000 bond for the man.

As a condition of his bond, the man cannot contact the victim. However, the suspect and victim have a class together at KU, George said, which complicates the no-contact order.

“You can attend the same class,” George said, “but no contact other than sitting in that room.”
