Lions tennis doubles sweep in dual victory

Lawrence High senior and No. 2 doubles player Matt Carmody returns a serve against Blue Valley Southwest on Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at Lawrence High. Carmody and teammate Michael Braman won, 8-2.

Lawrence High senior Matt Carmody knows there isn’t much time left in his tennis career. He’s making the most of it.

Carmody won in No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles to help the Lions beat Blue Valley Southwest in a dual, 7-2, on Tuesday afternoon at LHS.

After missing the past week because of an illness after singing in the school’s “Showtime” concert, there was just something different — in a good way — about his game when he returned to the court.

“I went to practice (Monday) for the first time in over a week, and I was feeling really confident in my swing and whatnot,” Carmody said. “I just played a lot better today.”

The Lions won all three doubles matches for the first time this year, as Thomas Irick and Elliott Abromeit won 8-2 in No. 1 doubles, Carmody teamed up with Michael Braman in No. 2 doubles for a 8-2 win, and Zach Bowie and Brendan Conner won 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.

LHS coach Chris Marshall had to shuffle his doubles teams around because of the amount of matches a player can participate in throughout the season, and it allowed some junior varsity players a chance to impress.

“It was nice to get a varsity win with those JV kids playing,” Marshall said. “It was good that they played well under pressure. They did better at doubles than they did at singles; some of them were a little overwhelmed playing those juniors and seniors.”

The Lions will be without junior Adam Eudaly, who had played at No. 1 doubles, after he broke both of his wrists and was life-flighted Sunday.

“It was a tragedy, and our hearts and prayers go out to him,” Marshall said. “Hopefully he can get those wrists fixed up with no problems, and hopefully we’ll get to see him next year.”

Carmody, who didn’t play tennis during his sophomore and junior years, will pair with senior Panyin Boye-Doe at regionals, which begin Saturday at LHS.

“I really want to win,” Carmody said. “I want to leave this season with a positive (vibe).”

After playing in the Sunflower League championships last week, Irick won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, and Abromeit won, 6-3, at No. 2 singles. Abromeit worked on stepping into the ball to be more aggressive and add some power and spin into his shots.

“I think I did pretty solid,” Abromeit said. “Wind always make it kind of challenging for me. I’m not so good in the wind, but I think persevered and kind of toughened up and got through it.”

LHS will compete in a dual at Mill Valley at 3:30 p.m. today.
