Kansas University men’s basketball coach Bill Self addressed the status of sophomore point guard Frank Mason III, after the floor general sprained his ankle in the second half of the Jayhawks’ 71-65 win over Florida Friday night at Allen Fieldhouse.

Mason, who finished with 12 points and five rebounds, did return to the game down the stretch.

“I think he turned it pretty good. He was hobbling around good,” Self said. “He’s a tough kid. He may miss a practice or two, but he’ll be out there.”

Tarik terrific so far: Former KU power forward Tarik Black, who made the roster of the NBA’s Houston Rockets as an undrafted free agent, is off to a great start to his pro career.

The 6-foot-11, 250-pounder averaged 4.7 points off 53.2 percent shooting and 5.6 rebounds while logging 17.4 minutes in the first 16 games.

“Who knows?” Self said, asked if rookie Black could wind up playing 10 or more years in the league. “He had 10 (points) and 11 (rebounds) last night (vs. Memphis).

“Dwight (Howard, injured) is not playing. His minutes are going to go way down whenever Dwight is playing. I would think Tarik has put himself in position to play in the league for a while, without question. Tarik is a kid who got better and better. He was really a good player by the end of the (last) year.”
