Free State golf ninth, LHS 10th at Topeka West
Topeka ? The Free State and Lawrence High boys golf teams competed in blustery conditions for the second week in a row Monday and finished ninth and 10th, respectively, at the Topeka West Invite.
FSHS freshman Jack Flynn led all city competitors with a round of 81, which placed him 20th overall.
Lawrence High’s No. 1 golfer Narito Mendez was just three strokes back of Flynn, carding a round of 84. The Lions’ Cole Brungardt was the only other area golfer to break 90, coming into the clubhouse with a score of 88.
LHS coach Dirk Wedd said the conditions made it difficult to put up low scores, but still saw some room for improvement.
“It was very cold and windy,” Wedd said. “We left some strokes on the course.”
The Lions and Firebirds will both compete next at the Olathe North Invite Monday at Falcon Ridge Golf Course in Lenexa.
