The Jewish Community Women are sponsoring two upcoming documentary film events at the Lawrence Jewish Community Congregation, 917 Highland Drive.

Each film examines various aspects of Jewish identity and will be followed by a panel discussion. The events are open to the public, and popcorn and cider will be served. A $1 donation is requested.

“Hiding and Seeking: Faith and Tolerance after the Holocaust” will be shown at 7 p.m. Saturday. Rabbi Moti Rieber, Lawrence Jewish Community Congregation, and Rebecca Rovit, Kansas University assistant professor of theater, will lead the discussion. The award-winning documentary follows an American Jewish father and his two ulta-orthodox adult sons to Poland in search of the Christian farmers who hid members of their family from the Nazis. Filmed in Brooklyn, Jerusalem and Poland, the film explores the Holocaust’s effect on faith in God and in humanity from an intergenerational perspective.

“Mamadrama: The Jewish Mother in Cinema,” will be shown at 2 p.m. Feb. 3. Tamara Falicov, KU associate professor of film and media studies, will lead the discussion. This film asks why the Jewish mother is almost always portrayed as a stereotype. It seeks to provide a tribute to the mother’s “real nature” by interweaving her personal experience with film clips and interviews with film historians, directors and actors.
