Lawrence man accused of displaying a knife and handgun, charged with aggravated assault

Police arrested a 23-year-old Lawrence man Saturday evening on an aggravated assault charge after he was accused of displaying a knife and handgun while inside a vehicle with some acquaintances hours earlier, but prosecutors amended the charge to misdemeanor criminally carrying or concealing a firearm.

Sgt. Matt Sarna, a Lawrence police spokesman, said police were called 5 p.m. Saturday to the 1800 block of Haskell Avenue about the alleged incident.

The victims accused the man, Dean C. Beeson, of displaying the weapons while the group was driving home earlier Saturday after a night out, Sarna said. No injuries were reported. According to jail records, Beeson was later found and arrested Saturday night in the 500 block of Louisiana Street, and prosecutors filed the misdemeanor charge against him Monday.

A judge set his bond at $1,500 and scheduled his next hearing for Dec. 20.
