LHS, Free State graduations ‘a go’ for outdoor ceremonies

The threat of rain having evaporated overnight, administrators of Lawrence’s two public high schools are pleased to report that this afternoon’s graduation ceremonies will be conducted outdoors as planned.

But that doesn’t mean people should ignore preparing for the weather.

“It’s going to be hot,” said Mike Norris, an assistant principal at Lawrence High School. “People should bring water.”

After seeing forecasts calling for temperatures in the mid-80s, winds of 20 mph and diminished chances for rain, administrators had agreed by 10 a.m. to stick with the original plan:

• Lawrence High will have graduation at 1 p.m. at the Lions’ outdoor stadium, 1901 La.

• Free State High School will conduct its ceremony at 4 p.m. at the Firebirds’ stadium, 4700 Overland Drive.

At each site, spectators will be sitting in the stands while graduates, faculty and administrators will be down on the field. Restrooms will be open but concessions stands will be closed, meaning anyone who wants to stay hydrated should make their own arrangements.

The Lawrence school district had reserved Allen Fieldhouse as a backup, in case of rainy weather. But that plan is no longer is in play, as administrators have followed the forecasts and decided that their school’s seniors should pick up their diplomas and turn their tassels under the sun.

“Everything’s a go,” Norris said.
