Power play

To the editor:

Well, the charade is over. I am referring to the mandatory process of public comment on the proposed coal-fired power plant in Holcomb. For several months, there have been public hearings and written comments regarding the Kansas Department of Health and Environment issuing a permit verifying that the plant will not unduly pollute our air. Democracy in action, right?

I have seen the parade of men in black suits from the Kansas utility companies that will own a small portion of the plant and will reap significant rewards. I have heard about the temporary construction jobs and the 75 or so permanent jobs to be created. I have a heard from a few Kansans who actually will use the electricity generated but not from the residents of Colorado and other states who will receive most of it. And I have stood with the many who are concerned about the results of emitting massive amounts of CO2 and other contaminants into our air.

Secretary Bremby, who denied the necessary air quality permit for the earlier plant proposal, finally was about to make a decision — and he resigned?! Surely Gov. Parkinson, backed by various MIB, left nothing to chance and ousted Bremby. They want the construction permit approved before January to avoid new national air quality standards intended to reduce global warming. Short-term profit trumps the environment; our children and grandchildren can deal with the consequences. Big Business as usual. The people, at least the people in power, have spoken.
