Dandy memory

To the editor:

Several years ago, my wife and I were in a little cafe in Santa Fe, N.M., for an evening meal. The place was a very small French-style restaurant on Burro Alley, tucked in a few blocks from the Plaza. The place was quite busy, the main dining area being filled, so we were escorted to a smaller dining area in the rear. We were the only couple in this overflow area.

After we ordered drinks and while we were waiting to order, a foursome was seated about 15 feet from us. We glanced over and exchanged smiles with the group. We went back to our discussion about ordering. I mentioned to my wife that one of the gentlemen looked familiar. And then it happened. The familiar-looking gentlemen produced a voice so recognizable that we immediately knew him to be “Dandy” Don Meredith. His lively conversation with the waitress and his dinner party brought back memories of Monday Night Football.

Needless to say, we were entertained. About halfway through our dinner, another party of six was seated close to us. Another voice recognition. Nancy Grace had entered with her dinner group. Needless to say, her shrill voice had broken the spell.

As Dandy would say “Turn out the lights; the party’s over.” The voice of Dandy Don will live in our memories.

Don Martin,
