Gunman in standoff reportedly intoxicated

A 23-year-old man was in custody Sunday night after a nearly 10-hour standoff with law enforcement agents in Wellsville.

Around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Wellsville police and Franklin County sheriff’s officers were called to a home in the 200 block of Locust Street in response to a report of shots being fired.

Police set up a perimeter around the house, and after being told that the armed occupant was intoxicated, had nearby residents evacuated.

Additional assistance was requested, and officers with the Ottawa Police Department Tactical Unit, Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Lawrence Police Department and Wellsville Fire Department responded.

Numerous attempts were made Sunday morning to contact the man, but were unsuccessful. Communication was finally established around 1 p.m., and the occupant was then taken into custody without incident and taken to Ottawa, according to Wellsville police.

No charges had been filed Sunday night.
