Coaching gaffes don’t hurt Lions

? Lawrence High football coach Dirk Wedd conceded he made two sideline mistakes in the Lions’ 14-0 loss to Olathe South on Thursday night.

Fortunately for Wedd, neither proved costly.

Early in the second quarter of a scoreless tie, O-South quarterback Brady Croucher appeared to have fumbled at the Lions’ 37-yard line. But the side judge raced in and ruled Croucher had been down before he fumbled.

Wedd went ballistic, stormed along the opposite sideline and vented his ire to the point where he was flagged for a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

“Three of the officials threw beanbags, meaning it was a fumble,” Wedd said, explaining his reaction. “But one guy said the ball was down.”

The penalty against Wedd moved the ball to the Lions’ 23 and, moments later, O-South’s Devin Cummings scooted around left end for an apparent touchdown.

Not so fast. The official who had ruled Croucher was down threw a flag. Olathe South, he indicated, had been guilty of holding.

A make-up call? Whatever, the touchdown was erased and the Falcons failed to score when Nolan Kellerman knocked down Croucher’s fourth-down pass several minutes later.

Wedd’s other gaffe occurred early in the third quarter on the series after O-South had scored to take a 6-0 lead. The Lions faced a fourth-and-five situation at their own 30-yard line and, instead of punting, Wedd opted for a fake punt.

Up-back Kellerman took the snap, but gained only three yards, and the Falcons took over.

“That was a bad call on my part,” Wedd said. “I was trying to make something out of nothing.”

Again, though, the mistake wasn’t costly.

Olathe South advanced to the Lions’ 11-yard-line after the fake-punt failure, but cornerback Nathan Hickey ended the threat when he picked off Croucher’s pass in the end zone – the Falcons’ lone turnover of the night.
