Missing memorial

To the editor:

I recently visited the Lawrence Public Library. After finding some books, I decided to look for a special bookshelf that had been given to the library after Centennial School was closed. The bookshelf is a memorial to a former Centennial student who was killed in the 9-11 attacks. Her name was Leslie Whittington. A Centennial parent built and painted the shelf. The school purchased several books that had been Leslie’s Favorites. “Leslie’s Favorites” was painted at the top of the shelf. Our school dedicated the shelf and books to Leslie at a special ceremony, Leslie’s mother even came. After Centennial was closed, the shelf went to the library.

When I finally found the bookshelf “Leslie’s Favorite’s” was covered up with “Staff Favorites.” As a former Centennial student this makes me very angry. Our school was closed, and now our special bookcase has been taken over.

Out of respect for Leslie Whittington, her family, and for Centennial school, I hope that the library will honor the original purpose of this bookshelf.

Phebe Myers,
